Games are On Starting Saturday, Save @ DICK's Sporting Goods, & More!

GAMES ON! Starting Saturday. . .

It has been a long wait, but our patience has finally paid off! We have received approval from Albemarle County to begin playing actual baseball games starting this Saturday, August 29th. We'll begin with coach-officiated scrimmages/games and progress to games that count in the Standings on September 12th.

In order to keep this privilege of using the field for our practices and
games, we have assured the County that we will publicize and enforce strict safety protocols that keep our coaches, players, and families safe while we carry out our programs. Failure to adhere to safety and social distancing guidelines may mean the loss of field usage and an early end to our season, so we are counting on everyone to help self-regulate and enforce protocols for safety and compliance.

Changes to Operations
to Prepare for Games

We have updated our "Return to Play" document, and we encourage everyone to download and refresh your knowledge so we are all operating from the same set of rules. There have been a few changes, summarized here:

  1. Parents/Guardians should remain at the field until their child has passed the screening process and has gained entry to the field.
  2. Coaches, umpires, and volunteers that are allowed inside the park must wear face coverings. It is highly recommended that players also wear face coverings when waiting at their tape mark along the fence. If a team is deemed to be in violation of social distancing for their non-playing, non-batting players, players on that team will be required to wear a mask during league events until the end of the season.
  3. Families will be required to honor volunteer commitments during the season as communicated in our registration process, but these tasks have changed to meet the needs of the league. Instead of a three-hour commitment to work in the Concessions Stand, all families will be required to perform Gatekeeping duties (30 – 45 minutes prior to the start of the event) at least once (most families will work 2-4 sessions) during the times when practices, scrimmage, or games are taking place. THE LEAGUE WILL ASSIGN YOUR TIMES. We understand that not all times will work for all families. If you are assigned a time that does not work for you, we ask that you work with members of your team to switch assignments so that all slots are covered.
  4. Field occupancy is limited to a maximum of 50 occupants. Only approved volunteers will be permitted to watch games from inside the ballpark. Assigned Gatekeepers, Scoreboard Operators, and Safety Monitors will be allowed into the ballpark during games and should bring their own chair as bleachers will not be used. Interested player-affiliated persons may sign up for these supplemental duties on a first-come, first-served basis, and must have a signed waiver on file with the league; the League will communicate the details of the sign-up process. Safety Monitors will be responsible for assisting coaches with keeping their players appropriately distanced while waiting to bat on offense, or during times when they are not actively playing in the outfield on defense.
  5. If a person has participated in a sporting event outside of the state or in a locality of Virginia in which the Governor has enacted additional restrictions to mitigate the spread of COVID-19, then that person will not be allowed to participate in activities for 14 days from the date of the sporting event. The Gatekeeper will be asking an additional question addressing this scenario.

Want to Watch Games Inside the Park?
Here Are Some Volunteer Opportunities.

As stated above, to comply with County regulations, the occupancy of Gardner Field has been limited to 50 persons. Only players, coaches, and approved volunteers will be allowed inside the park while games are in progress. People who have been assigned Gatekeeping duties are permitted to stay and watch the game from inside the park. In addition, we have three other volunteer positions to fill per game, and individuals who are willing to serve in these capacities are invited to stay. Scoreboard operators can keep score from the Press Box, and we need Safety Monitors (one per team) to help coaches keep players appropriately distanced during times when they are not playing in the outfield or batting.

We will manage volunteer duties using SignUp Genius. Here is a link to the sign up for those who wish to volunteer their time.

Volunteers are reminded that the bleachers will not be in use so those who stay are encouraged to bring their own chair.
